ABOUT US

The Independence Project is a collaborative advocacy network of digital assets geared to find solutions that seek independence from central authority, because we believe that centralization of power is the single greatest impediment to the working of a democracy. Each of these assets works synergistically to provide turnkey solutions toward true democracy and decentralized governance.

Take a hard look at the world around yourself and ask

DO WE NOT DESERVE INDEPENDENCE FROM

The problem of our current paradigm is not that the institutions and ideologies established by our forefathers are inherently flawed but that they have run their course and no longer serve us well.

Facing the inevitable exhaustion and looming failure of our current governing institutions/ideologies, we hold The Independence Project as a viable means of seeking an Alternative Futurism Project that salvages the victories of our current paradigm and overcomes its flaws with a new and better vector for progress.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO ACHIEVE IT?

The goal of independence.org is to build and assimilate an extended advocacy network to promote change and reform democracy. By bringing together community builders, thought leaders, and influencers onto a decentralized digital platform, we can create a space for crowdsourced solutions to amend laws and ensure that politicians are held accountable to the will of the people. In this document, we will explore the key components of this advocacy network, including decentralized digital brands, independent voting websites, a decentralized independent digital media consortium, trustless systems of self-governance, and sustainable social impact companies.

Means to activate democracy, the Independence way:

Our Plan

The Independence Project started a beta-project in Djibouti to help bring together opposition parties in Djibouti, the CTD Djibouti and the Djiboutian diaspora around the world with the objective of staging a peaceful democratic revolution. The revolution, which is already underway, has now entered its last phase. In its last phase, the opposition parties in Djibouti are consolidating to rise against the regime in power. The only thing we need now are funds to keep the operating going and ensure the peaceful transition of power. At the end of the revolution, the political parties shall come together in preparation for a free and fair election in 2 years’ time. The newly elected democratic government in Djibouti, shall consult with thought leaders from around the world and function as a pilot project for defending democracy.

MILLION FOR A MILLION PROGRAM

We have started the Million for a Million Program to raise a minimum of $ 1M to fund the muzzled opposition political parties and activists (know more) in leading a peaceful democratic revolution to deliver one million Djiboutians from the shackles of tyranny.

CAPT. OMAR ALI HASSAN

Our plan has been pioneered by Capt. Omar Ali Hassan, a Special Forces Commander who fought terrorist group Al Shebab for 2 years in Somalia with the Djiboutian Army and is the recipient of the International Rosa Parks Award. (Read more on Omar)

Our Partner

Our partner in the struggle against the corrupt Djiboutian regime has been CTD Djibouti — a coalition group consisting of some of the major opposition forces in Djibouti. As a collaborator on the ground in Djibouti, it is an influential body comprising of local political parties, human-rights organizations, political personalities, and concerned members of the civil society, who are working toward a democratic transition by peaceful and effective means.

Our beta project, djiboutian.com, is finally turning the tide against the brutal regime of Ismail Omar Guelleh. We have united major opposition groups and the Djiboutian public to lead a peaceful democratic revolution, that is long overdue.

Why Djibouti?

Ever since 2011, Amnesty International and Reporters without Borders have consistently reported detention and torture as the Guelleh regime’s indiscriminate reaction to dissent. This is because, despite Djibouti being the largest per capita recipient of US and French foreign aid in Africa, the country has seen little in terms of infrastructural development, improvement of living standards, and growth of employment opportunities. Friends of Djibouti reports that about 70% of Djibouti’s total population lives in dire poverty with extremely limited access to healthcare, welfare and utilities, while food and water scarcities continue to tear the nation apart.

The strategic location of Djibouti at the mouth of the Red Sea also has it controlling some of the world’s busiest shipping routes connecting Africa to the Middle East. 10% and 20% of the world’s total oil exports and commercial goods depend upon Djibouti for refueling and transshipment. As a result, the country’s port and associated railroads have attracted a significant portion of nonmilitary foreign investment. (1/3rd of the country’s GDP is reliant on the proceeds from its port). Owing to its strategic location, Djibouti is home to significant foreign interest already. The United States of America has its only permanent African military base in Djibouti – Camp Lemonnier, while China has recently developed its only overseas naval base. In fact, lease payments from foreign military bases add up to more than 5% of Djibouti’s GDP.

Despite its gigantic incoming revenue (the GDP of the country has risen by an average of more than 6% every year since 1985 to reach US$3.37 billion in 2021), a policy of minimal public spending along with large-scale corruption and nepotism, has led to the regime’s overall apathy for democratic measures. The country has also struggled with significant budget deficits and sky-high unemployment rates in recent years. By leveraging the country’s inherent geopolitical significance with multiple foreign stakeholders, President Ismail Omar Guelleh’s regime continues to curry Chinese favors while actively destroying all hopes for democracy and human rights in Djibouti.

What Have We Done So Far?

Since the beginning of 2021, we have worked tirelessly to unite the opposition parties in Djibouti, local activists, and the international Djiboutian community to lead a peaceful revolution and reinstate true democracy in the place of a brutal regime. With the revolution already underway, we now need a minimum of $1M to see it through. Besides providing legal and financial assistance to jailed activists, such as Barkat Abdoulwahab Ali Oudoum (know more here), we also collaborate (add partner link) with local activists, opposition groups, and our volunteers towards transparent and fact-based reporting on governmental atrocities. Our eyes and ears on the ground in Djibouti make sure the world knows about what is going on in Djibouti every day.

Our digital assets

With everyone going online these days, the web3 metaverse is going to be built out sooner than we expect. Owning premium digital dirt is like having an empty loft in downtown Manhattan. The Independence Project owns premium digital assets, each of which is set to become a decentralized social-impact company operating both independently and as part of the Project.
